GALLERY

L. Parker Stephenson Photographs is a New York based photography gallery specializing in work that represents creative documentary practices by artists who are engaged with social, cultural and environmental themes.

The Gallery is the exclusive dealer or North American representative for seven artists based in the US, Europe, and Japan and serves the archives of John Cohen and Jan Yoors.

In addition, the Gallery maintains an inventory of vintage avant-garde and classic works by leaders in the field and key figures of the 1920s-1950s. Along these lines, a range of exhibitions on early to mid-twentieth century modernist and experimental photography have been presented as well as thematic shows covering the broader history of the medium.

Many of the Gallery’s solo exhibitions marked a first for the artist or their first in the United States; among these are Raphaël Dallaporta, John Davies, Kikuji Kawada, Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere, and Witho Worms. Since then their works have been acquired by individuals and museums alike.

Our clients range from veteran collectors to those embarking on their first purchase and include museums in the US and abroad.

The gallery has been a member of AIPAD since 2012 and exhibited in its fair (now named The Photography Show), every year since then. Other fair participation includes Classic Photographs Los Angeles, Art on Paper, Nantucket Antiques Fair, and Paris Photo.

Inquiries are invited and welcome.

HISTORY

L. Parker Stephenson opened her gallery on Madison Avenue between 65th-66th streets in 2009. Fifteen years prior to that, Parker had left a career in banking to pursue her passion for photography. Her formal entry into the field was as an apprentice to Harry H. Lunn, Jr. a pioneer art dealer who played a pivotal role in establishing photography as a collectable fine art. After experiences in the auction world and at the International Center of Photography (ICP) working for the Director, Willis "Buzz" Hartshorn, she went on to join photography dealer Howard Greenberg, serving as Director of Gallery 292 (the intimate offshoot of Greenberg's main gallery until HGG moved to midtown Manhattan). Between the time at HGG in SoHo (2000-2003) and Fuller Building (2003-2006), she curated close to 30 exhibitions and managed dozens of artists and estates represented by these galleries.

Since setting off on her own twenty years ago, first as a private dealer then in opening the Gallery, Parker has offered clients a focused and personal experience. She enjoys sharing her experience, curiosity, and appreciation for photography with her clients and others visiting the Gallery for the first time. Her reputation is built on passion, connoisseurship, vision, integrity, and trust.

Land Acknowledgement

It is with gratitude and humility that we acknowledge that present day Upper East Side, where the Gallery is located, on the island of Manhattan, originally named Manahatta (hilly island), is on the unceded ancestral homelands of the Lenape people, who are indigenous peoples of this land. We pay honor and respect to their ancestors past and present.
